Numbers, Time, Money

Count enough to pay, schedule, reserve, and understand announcements.

Japanese numbers are regular, but counters and dates have traps. For now, learn the forms you will hear while traveling, paying, reserving, and scheduling.

Core numbers

いち, に, さん, よん, ご
ろく, なな, はち, きゅう, じゅう
ひゃく, せん, まん

Prefer よん, なな, きゅう in survival speech. They are clearer than し, しち, く.

Useful number chunks

Counters you need first

Counters are a long-term topic. For the first month, memorize the survival set.

ひとつ / one thing
ふたつ / two things
ひとり / one person
ふたり / two people
いちまい / one flat item, ticket, card, paper
にまい / two flat items

Time

What time is it now?
It is three o’clock.
It is nine thirty.
It is ten fifteen.
It is 3 PM.
It is 9 in the morning.

Scheduling phrases

What time does it start?
Until what time?
I will go at three.
Tomorrow morning is okay.

Money

How much is it?
It is 1,200 yen.
By card, please.
I will pay in cash.
Separately, please.
Please give me a receipt.
えん yen 現金 げんきん cash 無料 むりょう free of charge 有料 ゆうりょう paid / fee required 午前 ごぜん morning / AM 午後 ごご afternoon / PM 一日 ついたち / いちにち the 1st day of the month / one day Same kanji, different readings by use.
